I keep seeing references to the Monarch Butterflies that are being killed
by GM grain. People here seem to only see half the argument. Sure, some
environmentalists think the death of the butterflies is a danger to the
ecosystem. But I think that is the easy argument. Most people think
environmentalists are an extreme minority.
The more difficult argument is the fact that Monarch butterflies can eat
natural grain, but the GM grain kills them. There is obviously something
poisonous about GM grain that does not exist in natural grain. To the
public, this implies that the grain may be slightly poisonous or dangerous.
It is extremely difficult to explain to people why they should eat foods
that can act as a pesticide. The stuff kills insects, but we don't think it
will harm people. I think that this is the more difficult argument.
