I have much the same question. The only way I can think of immediately
to explain how glasses would help color perception for the color blind
would be in the case of an individual who is has some degree of color
perception, but whose color perception is limited by reason of a low
sensitivity of one or more classes of 'cone' receptors, that is, limited
sensitivity to a particular range of wavelengths. Then a filter which
which attenuates the other wavelengths could result in a net sensitivity
spectrum closer to the characteristic of that of a more normal eye.
Overall sensitivity would be reduced, so the special glasses would be
best used in relatively strong light.
