While reading "The Demon-haunted World" by Carl Sagan. I came
across this line: " Are there humans populating innumerable other
planets, as the Latter Day Saints teach?" (page 275 in paperback).

I guess that explains their interest in SETI.

I'm convinced of one thing, there's far more intelligence out there
in the universe than there is in congress.
