If you mean another toy AI like the products of the last 50 years, I'll take
improved programming tools any day. If you mean a real AI, capable of
manipulating symbols the way humans do, then I'll concede that it is much
more important - but I don't think you can write such a program in any
existing language without a multi-billion dollar investment that just isn't
going to happen anytime soon.

One of the reasons I want better programming tools is to reduce the
difficulty of that AI programming project to something that could be done by
a modest-sized company, or maybe a reasonably successful open-source effort.
