You're right, I'm guilty of sloppy logic here. How about this:
If property entails the right of exclusive control, then your basic
property consists of your (living) body. All other property can be
considered a sort of extension of this fundamental property.
Thus the fundamental good - insofar as you value your own life - is the
acquisition (or retention) and protection of property, both the property
you were born with and the property necessary to maintain it.
