I think you would run the risk of having the shield break up in a
nasty way - it is hit by a dust mote, and turns into a fireball. I
prefer Bishop's idea of sending a lot of very small and cheap and
redundant nanocraft by catapult instead - a few might flame out, but
enough would survive.
