It is a well know concept in spiritual practice to minimize one's
attachments, and the fewer attachments, the fewer sources of suffering you
have. This gives you the freedom to become aware of the way your mind
functions and this eventually reduces suffering and provides more
awareness, and more happiness. The ascetic tradition has developed in all
major religions as a way to do this.
I suppose amputation or spinal surgery may be a spiritual path, but enough
of sraw herrings and red men.....
