Wouldn't have worked otherwise (at the current state of know-how), since
males and females silence different genes in their germ cells in the
process called genomic imprinting. Experiments in fusing two female
haploid nuclei have failed for this reason - key constructional mechanisms
have been turned off.
Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em (for now).
