That's the closest thing to utopia I can think of. Of course, not
everybody might share this view.

The idea must have been around for some time. A SFnal treatment is James
P. Hogan's novel _Voyage From Yesteryear_ (1982), where he speculates
how a society would develop when everybody's material needs are
fulfilled. The result is a Libertarian "society", where people indeed
strive for reputation and recognition from others in their field of
choice (arts, science, engineering, ...).

I'm not sure whether it was in Raymond's "The Cathedral and the Bazaar"
or a followup paper, but the analysis that this model is behind the Open
Source community is convincing.
