 I think Larry Niven had the best take on this. In any universe in which
both time travel and intelligent being were possible, the intelligent beings
would continue to alter History until time travel is never invented. Thus no
time travel is the stable state. Viewing the past without being able to
alter it however would not have that problem. That would lead to a high
level of honesty I think. If people could reliably backtrack down your
timeline to see what exactly you did do, privacy really would be gone.
