Now that you mention the recognition of colours, I just thought that a
friend of mine, who works in an industrial setting, is building a machine to
sort potatoes. He does it by running the slowly rotating potatoes on a
conveyor belt by a camera which then scans the entire surface of the potato.
The interresting part is that they are using neural networks and fuzzy logic
to sort the potatoes. (about 75.000 a minute) First they made a neural net
that looked for everythin at once. Green spots, size, dark spots, rot etc.
etc. But they found out that they got much better and more controllable
results by having a neural net that looked for each of these thing
seperately and then compared their results to see wether it was a god or bad
potato.
Another eksample of a system with relatively small and simples parts that
works together for a complex result.
