Now I understand why a snowball (the American version of this
expression) should have a particularly unpromising future in the
Judaeo-Christo-Islamic negative afterlife...

But why do the British (or at least this particular one) nominate a
whelk for the same role? Surely not because the heat would dry it
out to death... things in that location are, by definition, already
dead.
