I don't know if we know enough about martial conditions at that time to
develop a good opinion. Of course, I would still think that it is
entirely possible, as the ROman's combat tactics allowed them to
overpower the less well developed people's of Europe, and technologies
like advanced steel, architecture, etc were state and guild secrets.
