Maybe George C. Williams' new PLAN AND PURPOSE IN NATURE (one of the
Science Masters series). And even better than WATCHMAKER, on the eye, is
Dawkins' recent CLIMBING MOUNT IMPROBABLE. Neither is the maximally
compressed thing you're looking for, but Williams' book is a neat 170 pages
and he's one of the one's leading evolutionists.
