In a message dated 97-07-29 14:01:30 EDT, you write:

<<
"the technology necessary for constructing a 'smart dust particle' may
be within reach in 5 years, says Berlin."

If that be the case then would I be correct in assuming the we already have
the technology to construct a "smart......bigger than a dust particle"...if
so how big is bigger? millimetter? inch...multiples of inches?

Some hair-brained scenarios speculating application of the above tech.

The elimination of chemical insecticides....replace it with solar
powered...(laser armed?) attack mites...anything fitting the criteria for an
insect within a given area is dead meat...or scorched chiton.

Or...if the computational problems are too great...(pattern recognition
etc)..give control of the attack mites to ten year old boys wearing
telepresence rigs...award points for the number of confirmed
kills...redemable for prizes.

Permiter and/or area control .....electromech... teleoperated (or
semi-teleoperated...may be a "swarm " is controled by one operater) with
lethal or sem-lethal (or just irritating) weaponry...size of
wasp...rhino-beetle...ant?...Invade our turf and we gnaw your bones....or
tickle you to insensibility.

Weed Control...robo-rabbit.
