I believe the distinction between science fiction and science fantasy
may have begun with George Lucas. Early on, he wanted to distinguish
the Star Wars stories from the genre of science fiction, because they
were not highly technical and they contained elements from his
favorite genre, fantasy. I don't know what the abbreviations have to do
with it, tho. People are always coming up with little points to
argue over.
