This isn't always true. The most an artist can do is hope that a piece of
art will serve the purpose she/he desires and do her/his utmost to create
the work in a manner which is most likely to fulfil that purpose. The
artist who wishes to demonstrate the selflessness and purity of Jesus by
painting him on a cross may only succeed in showing a criminal being killed
if the picture is viewed by peoples unaware of Christianity and its story.

Artists are as capable of failure as anyone else.
