I agree; the whole point of 'enlightenment'/ego-loss is to be in touch
with reality rather than living in a fantasy as most people do... and if
you ignore the mystic stuff and treat it as philosophy then I think that
some of the fundamental Buddhist ideas such as non-attachment make an
awful lot of sense if you're planning to live for a long time. Everything
changes, and neurotic attachment to anything will be a big problem for an
immortal.
