This is exactly the scenario in Greg Egan's "Wang's Carpet's", where an
interstellar upload expedition found (of all things) an artifical reality
sapience community in a molecular computer (floating polysaccharide
carpets) of natural origin (Greg E. even mentioned Stuart A. Kauffman's
EOC, wow).
