A similar scenario was used in "Heart of the Comet" by Gregory Benford and
David Brin.
I think in the book, there was some strange mold-like vegetation growing in
tunnels on Halley's
comet that "invaded" some of the astronauts and ended up forming a mutually
beneficial
symbioses relationship.
A great book.
