The way I see it is that there is no 'break' in the stream of
consciousness from being awake to sleeping. Instead, there is a transfer
from 'awake consciousness' to 'asleep consciousness'...what we call
'subconsciousness'. When we are asleep, our minds make our bodies into
mechanical systems. The mind needs not worry about an unforseen burst of
adrenaline etc., it is all under control. Dreaming proves that there is a
consciousness while we are sleeping, it is just on a different level.
