The technology has been around for quite some time (after doing some
web research). The interesting thing about this technology
(Millitech's) is that it is passive, picking up the natural
electromagnetic energy being emitted by people (around 20-150
GHz). The system works essentially like a camera, with some signal
processing (which is likely the most significant part of it) helping
on the imaging.

Neal Stephenson has some very believable and grounded writing. I'd
like the motorcycle (or at least the Radiks skateboard)...
Do a search on Altavista: "milimeter wave imaging"
