Aw Harvey,
You did it again. You sent me 31 citations to read about the American
Government. 30 were about the prior administration and 1 was from the ACLU
to the present administration thanking it for reversing the previous
administration's practice on secrecy. And, I never have found out what you
mean by the blanket term "secrecy." Are we talking about the long existing
policy of restricting information from the public at large that might get our
intelligence agents killed? That proceedure allows the defendent and their
attorneys access to the secret material but keeps it out of the public domain
where it would likely get someone killed.
Now, I have looked up the references you cited. A lot of them do not
exist at this time. A group of the others refer to things that happened
before the legistlation you are complaining about. One referred to a suspect
organization being prevented from handling large sums of money that might be
used against us by terrorists and several referred to individuals that were
being deported as illegal aliens in which some sort of "secret information"
became tangentially involved.
You also quite properly referred to a piece of emergency legistlation
that was rushed into law by our politicians immediately after 911. That
legistlation was really flawed but then again at such moments politicians
have a long history of doing something, anything, to prove they are on the
job. We also have a long history of our courts throwing such legistlation
out of court -- no doubt that will be the case in this instance.
I think seeing this legistlation overturned will probably be a good
thing but I will not succumb and become hysterical enough to blame on this
legistlation events that took place before it was even voted on.
Keep up the good work, I think we should be suspicious of government
power.
