I would heartily recommend everyone to read Robert Wright's analysis and
proposals for a sensible war on terrorism, if you haven't already done

I think he makes a pretty good case about why pissing a lot of people
off can be equated with a very low near-future national security for
the US. As he says "it's all about the memes". And from where I'm
sitting here, all comfortable on my ass looking at the world, the US
is doing a terrible job of making sure we'll have an overwhelming
supply of the wrong memes around for such near-future.
