I don't know exactly what you had in mind, but with a liberal view of
Humanities Greg Egan qualifies; AFAIK he's unchallenged for looking at what
life as an AI could be like. Pohl's later Gateway books are a distant second.
Andy Clark is a philosopher, head of cog sci at IU, and cited by Peter Voss.
I don't know much about his ideas yet.
You did happen to leave off Vinge and Kurzweil. :)
