Just responding quickly to this point: paper distribution surely sucks,
under the current increasingly centralized methods of book marketing.
Luckily, amazon and other online stores provide non-item-du-jour books like
THE SPIKE at somewhat cut-price levels that compensate for mailing costs.
Granted, most of us want to flip through a book and see what it's like
before laying down the plastic, and maybe the sample pages they provide are
insufficient. Still, it's an alternative to bookstores.
