In actuality, lead shot is extremely stable and does not poison
waterfowl, contrary to the claims of the ignorant greenies. However,
there are alternatives you can consider:
a) bismuth shot or steel shot: both are now the shot of choice for
waterfowl hunting. Try the reloading suppliers at your local gunshops.
Bismuth is about the same density as lead. While steel isn't as dense,
it still offers a significant deadening capability because most of it
comes from the action of the shot transferring energy outward as it
tries to stack up, which is irrelevant to the density of the material.
b) mail order your lead shot. Try http://www.cheaperthandirt.com to
mail order lead shot from their reloading supplies department. You
might also be able to get some at auction via
http://www.auctionarms.com.
c) cannibalize a dead blow hammer: You can buy high impact polymer
hammers at Sears, etc which have the head filled with lead shot to
dampen the impact of its striking. Cut these suckers open and
cannibalize the shot. Only for the truly desperate who live where their
postal workers xray and search your mail.
