Robert J. Bradbury noted:
"Emlyn sees the critical point. Will it take 20 years to go from
being able to add a chromosome to a cell from an embryo to being able
to being able to add sophisticated patches to adult genomes? Go
back 20 years to 1982 -- we couldn't sequence DNA or proteins, there
were no gene therapy trials, etc."
True! I just thought I'd mention that in 1982 by first understanding of gene
therapies came from reading the SF writer John Varley. When I read about
using them on ADULTS my whole world went "see-saw" but still it took another
ten years to really sink in... shows how dumb I am!
Though as Mez has set out in some detail the practical difficulties are
immense, and without the Singularity and nanotech (a nonsense statement, but
anyhow) you would be looking at centuries just to iron out the rough
problems with immortal maintenance.
