Hubert,
I can imagine how you felt but my reaction is that to be so down on
yourself or your country is totally uncalled for. If you were not taught
anything about what is good or decent or strong about Germany or the German
people you may nevertheless rest assured that those of us that fought against
you know your strengths.
I don't know that we have any one opinion of Germany but often I have
heard the thought expressed that pound for pound you were the best -- your
problem was that Hitler lined up too many pounds against you.
As to the rise of Hitler if you read Frederick von Hayek's Road to
Serfdom you will find that he regards what happen in Germany and in the
Soviet Union was nothing more than the way socialism usually plays itself
out. If you will recall you had a socialist government that failed miserably
before Hitler took over. According to von Hayek to have the government fail
in the manner the first one did was entirely to be expected. To have the
people, or enough of the people, turn to a person like Hitler was also to be
expected.
BTW, when I say we fought Hitler I am speaking of my country -- I was
only 7 when it started.
But I am neither an expert on Germany nor socialism -- take a look at
von Hayek's book and decide for yourself.
Also tomorrow is our national holiday Thanksgiving. I invite you and
all others to join us. We have a big meal and give thanks for our blessings
through the year. You may pray or not as you wish but count your blessings.
As to the food we have turkey, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, etc. But in
reality those were just the products of our land. You might do the same only
use the products of your land. Have some beer, good German wine, apple
strudel, what do you call the good German pasta that you extrude into boiling
water?
Let's see if my memory and spelling is good enough. I would have
Weiss Beer, Liebfraumilch and a Jaeger's dish that my favorite German
restaurant used to serve. Of course Hassenpfieffer or your ox tail stew is
good too. That is enough, I am gaining weight just writing about it. LOL
