Well put, mez. I feel the same way.

When the Vietnam war raged, a saying gained currency
in usage by the pro-war side: "My country right or
wrong." To them it meant patriotism/nationalism
trumps morality.

I always marvelled at this, because of the way it was
twisted. The original was: "My country right or
wrong. When right, to keep it right. When wrong, to
set it right."

Criticism is necessary in order to see when something
must be "set right". When criticism becomes
disloyalty, and when publication of criticism becomes
unpopular and unprofitable, you're in for trouble.

How much trouble are we in for? I guess we'll just
have to wait and see.
