Human growth hormone causes the liver to produce IGF-1, which is an
anabolic hormone similar to that of insulin. Other insulin-like growth
factors are also produced but IGF-1 is the factor thought to be
responsible for the positive anabolic effects of growth hormone.

By the way growth hormone is not unhealthy when taken in normal
physiological replacement doses (about 1 iu per day). Adverse side
effects occur when the excessive doses are used, as in the Blackman
study currently in the news in which the subjects received three 7 iu
injections per week.
