Dr Graps opined:
<<It's not just European astronomers, it's tourists too. People are
avoiding to go near the U.S. I've met more than a few families from
Australia and New Zealand vacationing in Europe, who specifically
avoided traveling anywhere near the U.S. and chose European
holidays, or, at the very least routed their trips to not have any
stopovers in the U.S.
So the research environment for dealing with anything U.S. is not
exactly inviting, and overall the goodwill from the U.S. has
declined. So now people outside the borders are not motivated to
deal with things U.S.-related and I suspect that will be felt in
people's pocketbooks, and not later, but sooner.

I don't know about you, but my purpose in life in not being "wuved" by people
who don't give a care whether we live or perish. I contend that life is not a
popularity contest and there is much to say for surviving and thriving in
spite of ones adversaries.
American business management and government leaders under-utlizes and
under-encourages local American talent (of whatever ethnic orgin). Aussie and
New Zealanders may "holiday" wherever it brings them the most comfort. They
may even disagree with American policy against Jihadism. But I would hope
they would then demur from asking assitance, should such Jihadis come a
knock'in at their door.
As far as the general direction and composition of research, I am of the
opinion that somehwere along the line it needs to have a material pay-off,
and not simply rest on its own laurels, while supping from the public till.
