META: Old World vs. New; Guns vs. None

No time here to do much but skim quickly, but I see the flickering of a
couple of topics that regularly create unproductive noise on the list --
namely "The US vs. the rest of the civilized world" and "guns are bad
vs. guns are good." I urge all posters -- especially those who have
been here for a while and KNOW that these topics tend to spiral into
unproductive flame wars -- to please pause before responding in these
threads.

My own views are no secret -- I'm personally heavily armed and think I
have a right to be and I also favor vigorous military action against
terrorists. But I would like subscribers to the list -- both those who
agree with me on these subjects and those who don't -- to PLEASE not
allow the current flickers to blow into an interminable flame war.
State your case, and then be done with it.

As my favorite judge says in a long, Texas drawl while looking over his
glasses at a long-winded advocate once the point is made: "Move it
along, counselor: I'm not as dumb as I look."
