Robert Bradbury asks:
<<And so I am forced to ask -- *where* is Europe in all of this?
How bad would it have to get before Europe would bring itself
to the table as a really active participant? [It seems like
all the recent NATO activity has been simply having pleasant
conferences and more form rather than substance.>>

Er...not to be a dick, but as an American Nationalist, and ethnic Jew, allow
me to be the canary in the mine. And with most Europeans, my dear Extropes,
there is methane to be found in the mine. The canary is passing out, the
Euro's look to themselves, and they have a real difficult time relating to
the USA regarding 9-11. I wonder if the Aussies now feel any aggression
toward the Islamic Jihadis now or will they wait till Sidney is hit with
sarin?

More to the point, we have W Bush going after Iraq (a sweet target and an
opportunity to free ourselves from the Saudis) and yet we have a Presidency
mired in support of the Saudi regime (Daddy B. big in the Carlyle Group which
services Saudi interests almost as much as the US State Dept.) Notice the
latest dodging by the FBI & Bush to avoid involving the Saudis in the
financing of Jihadi Islam? Looks like a bi-partisan Senate Intelligence
Committee will be dealing with this (Bob Graham and Sen Shelby)

We will have to either come to an undertsanding with Pakistan and N. Korea,
or rev-up the anti-missle capability, perhaps also anti-MIRV capability.

Yes, this is not the glorious future dreamed of, but a much tougher path.
Still there will be new tech developments to enhance things as well as keep
tranhumanism in business.
