** NGC 6240: Two Supermassive Black Holes in Same Galaxy

- For the first time, scientists have proof two supermassive black
holes exist together in the same galaxy, thanks to data from NASA's
Chandra X-ray Observatory. These black holes are orbiting each other and
will merge several hundred million years from now, to create an even
larger black hole resulting in a catastrophic event that will unleash
intense radiation and gravitational waves.

** View the Black Hole Merger Animation

- This animation shows a merger of two galaxies that forms a single
galaxy with two centrally located supermassive black holes surrounded by
disks of hot gas. The black holes orbit each other for hundreds of
millions of years before they merge to form a single supermassive black
hole that sends out intense gravitational waves.
