Or it'd be a church function, funded by tithes which were practically a tax.
Or you'd be helped by the small local community which knew you and knew you
weren't a slacker, unless you pissed off the small local community for being
the wrong religion or just weird. This has trouble working in the large
high-mobility cities we tend to gather in.
