The NY Times Magazine section has a very interesting article about
the animal rights debate.

See:
An Animal's Place
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/11/10/magazine/10ANIMAL.html?8hpist=&pagewanted=print

(Or presumably in the magazine section of the Sunday Times.)

Its about 13 pages.

It provides a good background starting with Singer's "Animal Liberation",
goes on to discuss the problems of "argument from marginal cases" comparing
the suffering capacity of normal chimpanzees vs. retarded humans. Then
it goes on to examine some of the nastier aspects of factory farming and
contrasts it with "free farming".

The topics discussed provide useful background for discussions transhumanists
might have in the future when we start expanding the intellectual and moral
range of up & down evolving posthumans.
