Not really, though I am having trouble believing that your modified
version of SHRDLU would constitute a person. My idea of a sentient
upload is infinitely more complex, and is for all intents and purposes
an exact duplicate of the physical person who was uploaded (even if only
simulated). SHRDLU still looks to me like a descendent of ELIZA (but, as
you say, far more sophisticated with many advanced features including a
world renderer, world planner, robotic arms and so forth).

I suppose that is the ultimate question -- whether sentience can arise
from machine intelligence. My answer is yes, but for some reason I don't
see it happening in SHRDLU.
