Ah yes, Ishi, subject of a fifth grade field trip back in my California
youth.
I flew to Santa Barbara a few weeks ago for my kid brother's wedding. My
significant other (partner, quasi-wife, girlfriend, whatever) was very
interested in visiting Mission Santa Barbara. I had a different opinion
of what might be a fun activity for that day (wine tasting at the
vineyards near Solvang) and so I explained to her that California
missions were places at which white men threatened native americans like
Ishi with hell-fire and eternal damnation. The mission didn't seem so
interesting to her after that.
