Growing up in California, all the stories I ever heard about
the Indians who lived here during and prior to the Spanish
conquest portrayed them as quite peaceful. (Excluded from the
textbooks was any account of negative qualities attending
the Spanish too, for that matter.)
But in addition one anthropology course and some outside
reading later when I was in college left me with the
impression that West Coast indians---and for sure the
northwest ones---were very peaceful, i.e., did not
engage in wars with each other.
Does anyone know that, or better, or can anyone point me to
more specific information? Because I recently heard it claimed
that this is a myth.
Thanks,
Lee
