In one of Greg Egan's books (possibly Diasphora?) people are duplicated and
sent out traveling in separate spaceships. It is understood that some of
the copies will die, some will contact other copies and share experiences,
some will simply branch out on their own path with no expectation of future
contact.
I think this idea is very extropic, because it is broadening and expanding
the range of consciousness in the universe. I think ideas like this, while
purely hypothetical today, will have practical application in our future and
are worth thinking about.
Personally, I think it's most useful to consider each of these copies a
separate individual/person/identity, with individual rights and
responsibilities, at the same time acknowledging that the copies have much
in common with each other. However, I haven't yet studies Lee's "Seven
Levels of Identity", so I may change my minds.
