There's at least one exception I can think of--the Oneida community,
originally formed as a collective-marriage commune supporting itself
with collectively-owned farms and by selling crafts. After their
charismatic founder left his incompetent son in charge, they simply
ignored him and many of his father's original teachings and became
Oneida Community, Limited, now Oneida corporation, the largest
manufacturer of stainless steel flatware in the country.

That's certainly one way to make a commune successful--turn it
into a useful enterprize.
