SCIENCE: Prion diseases explained

It would appear that scientists now have a good handle on
how prion diseases cause neuronal cell death and eventually
produce Mad Cow Disease.

It turns out the misfolded prion proteins overwhelm the
normal protein recycling apparatus in the cell and accumulate
to cause cell death.
