A holon is a bounded chunk with an identifiable systemic function. It is
usually made of smaller holons, and forms part of a larger holon: it is a
holistic atom. I attribute this very useful coinage to Arthur Koestler; it
is deployed vigorously in his great book THE ACT OF CREATION.
