We know because of the many cellphone calls by passengers to loved ones
and 911, by flight attendants to FAA flight controllers, etc. who
described them as carrying knives and box cutters, and possibly even
one firearm, given one report of a flight attendant notifying the FAA
that a passenger had been shot by a hijacker.
