In a message dated 9/24/2002 3:45:13 PM Central Standard Time,
rms2g@virginia.edu quotes Lee saying: I have hardly met anyone whose
emotional circuitry is so turned off, or who is so innocent of all the
tangential issues, that they could be entirely unbiased about The Bell Curve.

That is what so frustrating about TBC. So many people read that book and go
haring off on the race issue and in that process IMHO miss the whole point of
the book. Yet the truth is the authors did raise one issue that I think
scared even them.
If you haven't read the book I suggest you do this. At the beginning
of many chapters you will find the authors put in a brief summary of the
chapters contents. I recommend you read those summaries only unless you find
yourself attracted to the total book. When you get over in the back chapters
the authors quit giving summaries. Those two or three chapters are the
policy chapters. I found those frightening and I think the authors did also
-- that is my perception.
I suggest that you don't buy the book -- go down to your local library
when you have a couple of hours, get the book from the shelves and skim it in
the manner I suggested. Later if you wish to read the entire book that is
fine.
However, I also believe H & M describe a problem that if it got
extreme enough could seriously threaten our society to a greater or lesser
extent.
