Consider biofeedback, Lee. It is common knowledge that people can with
enough training learn to take some conscious control of their heart
rate. This is not unlike the ability we already have to take some
conscious control of our breath rate. If we can take conscious control
of our hearts and lungs then why is it so hard to believe they are
controlled unconsciously by us at other times?

People are capable also of even more remarkable feats, such as those of
taking conscious control of blood pressure and body temperature. Given
the relative ease at which these unconscious bodily processes can be
accessed and controlled by the trained conscious mind, it should be
clear that in all individuals these unconscious bodily processes are
driven by unconscious operations that exist not far beneath the
threshold of normal conscious awareness.
