Firms replacing government-run police forces. Instead of the police you
would have a number of firms like you paid to protect you and to uphold
the law. Competition and other economic factors would prevent the more
obvious problems, although critics disagree. This subject has been
debated a lot and fiercely among anarchocapitalists and on the
extropians list in the past. If you google on the term "Privately
produced law" you will find oodles of discussions pro and con. There are
also some good discussions about in David Friedman's _The Machinery of
Freedom_.
