Harvey, I don't want to pour oil into the flames for the sake that your email partner
thinks he ist right. That's why I write to you on a private basis.
If I, as a German citizen, choose to say "The Nazis" ot "The Nazi Party" I make an
implicit statement that I don't belong to any neo nazi party and that I don't approve of
the things that happenend between 1933 and 1945. This is a tacit understanding between
contemporary German citizens. You experience it as a child, that the term Nazi is meant
to sound contemptous and disapproving.

The Nazis, when they were in power, called themselves "National Socialist". That was the
official term and they never reffered to themselves as Nazis. That was the
term of Hitler's opponents, and nowadays it still has the odour of hate and contempt.
For a foreigner it's almost impossible to get this difference from writings only. You
must have grown up with it and must have *heard* it to really understand.

Cheers

Hubert
