Here's a fun anecdote:

I asked a friend recently released from prison if he would have felt
safer with a camera in his cell. He said no, as they would've found his
contraband. I wondered what kind of contraband my friend would need,
since he was determined to be a model prisoner. Turned out it was a
reading light, for late night reading (which was allowed).

You could buy a little booklight at the prison store. It used a regular
booklight bulb and 4 AA batteries. The batteries would fade in a few
hours. My friend calculated this would cost him $400/yearly in AA
batteries (no rechargables, no outlets in cells).

Some entrepreneurial inmate was modifying these to use 2 white LEDs and
just 2 AA batteries. The benefit here was that the batteries lasted for
weeks. The modified booklights were considered contraband. They were
confiscated on sight.
